Changing the face of Peruvian Healthcare

Peru is a third world country, and although it has a medical system in place, Peru lacks the knowledge and resources to function at it's full potential. 40% of the country lives in poverty and it is the upper class who really gets the limited care that the government can offer.

In May 2012, I will be travelling to Peru to help establish medical centres, help doctors with their common practices, help people learn basic first aid (so to an extent they can take care of themselves) and help out with a UN-initiated campaign to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. I'll be down in Peru for about a month. I'm going through a well-known organization called Nexos Voluntarios (www.nexosvoluntarios.org). In total, my trip will be about $5000. ...And here's where the fundraising comes in.

Sleep is a Symptom of Caffeine Deprivation

And that is the truth! That's why selling coffee in the centre of campus in the middle of midterms was an absolute success!

So, for those of you that don't know: today I hosted a bake sale at the Y-intersection on campus. It ran from 11am-2pm. We baked up a storm yesterday at my place and sold it today, along with Santropol coffee.

Everything sold very well! All four massive thermoses of coffee were sold out before 1pm. Thanks so much to Tyler, Victor, MJ, Robin, Claire, Alex, Meaghan, Jef and Elena for all your help! (And special thanks to all those people I bugged to death for various bits of help). And most of all, thanks so much to Santropol for all your help and support in supplying such a large amount of coffee!!

In total, today was a success. I ended up with a total income of $140.19 Canadian, $1 American and a Euro.

You guys are awesome, thanks for all your help!

Montreal and Quidditch

Hello Again Everyone!

It's been awhile. I've settled into my apartment finally: I've got it all painted, finally furnished, and classes have begun. Needless to say, I've been busy!

I'm at almost $1500 now! I want to say thanks to all of you who have supported me along my way. Right now, I am in the midst of trying to organize events and fundraisers at my university. I was fundraising queen in highschool -- I hosted so many events, so many times!! It's harder now with no communal cafeteria or lobby where students go by. I'm trying to organize bake sales, as well as things like entrance cocktail parties (with a small entrance fee), selling coffee (donated by local cafes/restaurants), etc. If anyone has any ideas or can help me out in any way, please let me know! In the meantime, I'm going through heavy paperwork trying to book a spot to fundraise.

And with that, I am going to end on a note of determination and perseverance! Something very interesting happened the other day: during Quidditch practice (yes, Quidditch), a team member got a 5inch slash in his leg from a broken metal broom. There was a decent amount of blood and a lot of people standing, watching, waiting, wondering what was going to happen. After retrieving a first aid kit from the library, I ran back out to help my friend. He was lying down, with my other friend holding his leg to keep it elevated. I rummaged through the first aid kit, quickly grabbing all my supplies. Using all the first aid and lifeguard training I have hammered into my brain for the last decade, I cleaned and wrapped up the wound. Once finished, I gave him instructions on how to take care of the wound from then on.

This event did so much for me in many ways. I was so focused during the whole procedure. I was calm (albeit working quickly and efficiently), and my mind worked in such an organized, processed manner. I am so ready for this experience. I want to work in the medical field, I want to help people and I want to be the best I can possibly be at it. I want this so badly.

This trip to Peru means so much to me, and if I can do this kind of work for the rest of my life, I would die happy.

Paper Jewellery

Hola !

I have just came back from another successful night of fundraising, and am thus in an extraordinary mood. I set a record last Thursday: I made $150 in just over an hour!

I have now fundraised just over $800 for my cause. I must say, it is very satisfying to know that my hard work is getting me somewhere. Thus far, all my money towards my trip has come from myself (through various jobs), or you, my sponsors! I want to continue this pattern and by the end, I want to say that I did this all without a single penny from my parents.

As far as my paper jewellery is concerned, I've now created a small collection of items! I will post pictures below. Any advice/questions/comments are welcome! I am in the process of approaching stores and requesting them to sell my wares. If you are interested in purchasing something (and/or requesting a certain colour scheme/pattern), feel free to email me.

Enjoy!

This necklace is made of two kinds of paper and beads. Took about 5hrs to make.
$20

Please forgive the fact that these next two pictures are sideways.
This bracelet is not only handmade, but the beads on it are too! In total, about 3hrs work.
$10

Once again, all handmade! Took about 4hrs.
$15

I will post more pictures as I make them. For the meantime, these images should give a general feel of what to expect from me! I hope you enjoy them, and again, any comments/questions are welcome!

Getting the Ball Rolling

Hello Again!

So just a bit of an update: fundraising is going well! I went out tonight and returned an hour later with $75. Hooray!

To mix things up a bit, I'm trying to impliment other ways of fundraising. I am skilled with my hands, so I thought making something artistic and trying to sell it. I think it would work well. I am in the process of making many, many forms of paper jewelry (it's really cool, I promise!), and selling them, own my own and hopefully through local businesses as well. When I have more completed, I will be sure to take pictures and post them on here. Further, if anyone knows of any great places to sell something like this, please let me know!

As for other ideas, a bake sale would be an awesome way to fundraise, except I think I will wait til the school year starts again and so I can feed all those hungry university students (I'll try to set up something at the "Y" intersection on McGill campus....anyone willing to help sell or bake will have my eternal thanks!). I plan on writing letters to varioius businesses, requesting donations. I would also like to request (from large stores like Sobeys) to set up a table at the front doors where I can hit up people there. Hopefully I will start approaching these stores this upcoming weekend.

That's all for now! Thanks again for all your continuing support!

Getting Started

Hola!

And thus starts my efforts to fundraise for my trip next summer. For those of you that don't know, Peru is a third world country, and although it has a medical system in place, Peru lacks the knowledge and resources to function at it's full potential. 40% of the country lives in poverty and it is the upper class who really gets the limited care that the government can offer.

In May 2011, I will be travelling to Peru to help establish medical centres, help doctors with their common practices, help people learn basic first aid (so to an extent they can take care of themselves) and help out with a UN-initiated campaign to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. I'll be down in Peru for about a month to a month and a half. I'm going through a well-known organization called Nexos Voluntarios (www.nexosvoluntarios.org). In total, my trip will be about $6000. ...And here's where the fundraising comes in.

I've had plenty of experience fundraising throughout my highschool career. I helped run a club at Cameron Heights C.I., called SICA (Student International Community Assistance), where we adopted a Peruvian village called Pamplona Alta (just outside of Lima). Over my years at Cameron, we helped supply the village with a library, a radio communications centre and dozens of water filters. This is where my passion for helping the Peruvian culture began. As for my medical passion, my dad is a doctor and my mother owns her own physiotherapy clinic....so I suppose you could say that being in the medical profession runs in the family. I'm planning to travel to medical school after I finish up my undergraduate degree at McGill University (Montreal, QC), and I hope to eventually work for Doctors Without Borders (aka MSF).

Last night, I went out for the first time to fundraise (door to door), and came back 45minutes later with $104.00 !! Thanks to all those who donated! My other projects to fundraise include writing to businesses requesting people to donate and sponsor me, as well as asking to leave donation boxes in various businesses around the city. I'm quite artsy, so I'm contemplating the idea of designing and selling jewelry as a way to fundraise as well. Any suggestions or other ideas would be welcome!

I hope I'm starting off on the right foot with this blog. In the meantime, I'm determined to teach myself Spanish. Any suggestions on fundraising (or otherwise) would be great! I hope you all have an awesome Thursday, and I'll keep in touch with my progress!
