Changing the face of Peruvian Healthcare

Peru is a third world country, and although it has a medical system in place, Peru lacks the knowledge and resources to function at it's full potential. 40% of the country lives in poverty and it is the upper class who really gets the limited care that the government can offer.

In May 2012, I will be travelling to Peru to help establish medical centres, help doctors with their common practices, help people learn basic first aid (so to an extent they can take care of themselves) and help out with a UN-initiated campaign to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. I'll be down in Peru for about a month. I'm going through a well-known organization called Nexos Voluntarios (www.nexosvoluntarios.org). In total, my trip will be about $5000. ...And here's where the fundraising comes in.

Summer Begins

So I did some research and it turns out that I am allowed to sell all my homemade paper jewelry at Tamtams (Parc Mont Royal) each Sunday!

Come out to support Peruvian Health Care!
Even if you don't buy anything, come on by and say hello! I should be there all day :)

Summer is HERE.

Summer is here and I'm more than ready to spend the entire time fundraising. Last summer, I raised $1500 in a few months, and I'm ready to beat my record this summer.

Some more door-to-door to follow. As well, I already have a lineup of lovely fundraisers for the fall school year.

Ready for it? Watch me.

Irreplaceable.

And the surveys have been completed! Two testing days and 32 people later, I have a box full of completed surveys. The surveys will be shipped back to ETS Canada in the next few days.

I want to give a big thank you to everyone who helped me and completed a survey! I know all you arts kids hate me now, but I want you to know that I really appreciate all your help and even if you hate me, I will love you forever.

More updates to come.

More than a lot to say.

Hola mis amigos!

I have more than a lot to report!

I have a new fundraiser coming up in the next 2 weeks! I have been contacted by a survey company (Educational Testing Service Canada, Inc.) to conduct several reading comprehension-esque surveys to Native French and Native English speakers. If you are interested in writing the test, let me know because I am interested in having you take it!! The test will take place on Friday, February 4th, at 5:30pm, in Schulich Library (McGill University). A second test (for those who cannot make the first) will be happening as well, but the date has yet to be set. I am looking for more Native French speakers, so if you grew up speaking French, I want you!!

Furthermore! Due to some unforeseen problems with schoolwork/courses, I am obligated to postpone my trip until the summer of 2012. This being the case, however, I am hoping I can use this to my advantage by fundraising enough money to spend a longer period of time down there.

Before I head off, I want to give a big shout out to all of those people who are helping me conduct the survey! You guys are super awesome, and thanks so much for your help and support :) It means a lot and helps so much!!

Sleep is a Symptom of Caffeine Deprivation

And that is the truth! That's why selling coffee in the centre of campus in the middle of midterms was an absolute success!

So, for those of you that don't know: today I hosted a bake sale at the Y-intersection on campus. It ran from 11am-2pm. We baked up a storm yesterday at my place and sold it today, along with Santropol coffee.

Everything sold very well! All four massive thermoses of coffee were sold out before 1pm. Thanks so much to Tyler, Victor, MJ, Robin, Claire, Alex, Meaghan, Jef and Elena for all your help! (And special thanks to all those people I bugged to death for various bits of help). And most of all, thanks so much to Santropol for all your help and support in supplying such a large amount of coffee!!

In total, today was a success. I ended up with a total income of $140.19 Canadian, $1 American and a Euro.

You guys are awesome, thanks for all your help!

Montreal and Quidditch

Hello Again Everyone!

It's been awhile. I've settled into my apartment finally: I've got it all painted, finally furnished, and classes have begun. Needless to say, I've been busy!

I'm at almost $1500 now! I want to say thanks to all of you who have supported me along my way. Right now, I am in the midst of trying to organize events and fundraisers at my university. I was fundraising queen in highschool -- I hosted so many events, so many times!! It's harder now with no communal cafeteria or lobby where students go by. I'm trying to organize bake sales, as well as things like entrance cocktail parties (with a small entrance fee), selling coffee (donated by local cafes/restaurants), etc. If anyone has any ideas or can help me out in any way, please let me know! In the meantime, I'm going through heavy paperwork trying to book a spot to fundraise.

And with that, I am going to end on a note of determination and perseverance! Something very interesting happened the other day: during Quidditch practice (yes, Quidditch), a team member got a 5inch slash in his leg from a broken metal broom. There was a decent amount of blood and a lot of people standing, watching, waiting, wondering what was going to happen. After retrieving a first aid kit from the library, I ran back out to help my friend. He was lying down, with my other friend holding his leg to keep it elevated. I rummaged through the first aid kit, quickly grabbing all my supplies. Using all the first aid and lifeguard training I have hammered into my brain for the last decade, I cleaned and wrapped up the wound. Once finished, I gave him instructions on how to take care of the wound from then on.

This event did so much for me in many ways. I was so focused during the whole procedure. I was calm (albeit working quickly and efficiently), and my mind worked in such an organized, processed manner. I am so ready for this experience. I want to work in the medical field, I want to help people and I want to be the best I can possibly be at it. I want this so badly.

This trip to Peru means so much to me, and if I can do this kind of work for the rest of my life, I would die happy.
